Cicada Artwork
I wanted to do something special for the release of the graphic novel Cicadapocalypse, so I commissioned five amazing artists to create cicada-themed artwork.
A countdown subscription was offered on Kickstarter, which shipped backers a print of the art in the months leading up to the 2024 cicada emergence.
Luckily for you, we had some prints left over, and you can buy them with the book in our shop.
Ryan Berkley
I first saw Ryan Berkley’s amazing work in college when two fellow students used his prints as talking animals for a mock advertising campaign. To my knowledge, it never saw the light of day, but the awesome illustrations of detailed, anatomically correct animals in clothing (plus some pop culture) has forever stuck with me. Check out Ryan’s vast collection of clever and handsome work on his website.
Sydney Hanson
If you have kids, you’ve probably seen Sydney Hanson’s beautiful and adorable work in bookstores, libraries, and gift shops. She has illustrated a tremendous number of children’s books and worked with various big-name entertainment studios (Pixar, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Disney, etc.) for character design and beyond. Her love for nature is obvious in how she depicts creatures that are sometimes overlooked.
Jennifer Angus
Jennifer Angus is an amazing artist and educator. Her gorgeous installations help people overcome their fear of insects and appreciate the wonders around them. Enjoy her installations on Instagram.
Raku Inoue
I’ve long been fascinated by “earth works” like those of Andy Goldsworthy, but Raku Inoue takes things to the next level with his all-natural creation of everything from insects to pop culture icons. I love that he uses materials from nature and that they vary from season to season (i.e. flowers in the spring, colored leaves in the fall, etc.). Lately he’s been experimenting with bark textures, and I can’t get enough; they’re gorgeous, creative, and fun.
Lianne Pflug
Lianne Pflug is a ridiculously talented illustrator based in New Jersey. I was first introduced to her because of her periodical cicada illustrations for Purdue University, but her balance of saturated and soft colors, biology, and a touch of cuteness have made me a forever fan. Check out her gorgeous greeting cards and stationary in her shop.
