Cicada Books

Best resources for teachers
As periodical cicadas take over outside, kids love to learn more about them. The following books are fantastic resources for teachers, students, and cicada enthusiasts.
Doug Wechsler
The Cicadas are Coming!

This fantastic and educational book is packed with terrific original photography of the lifecycle of periodical cicadas. Author and photographer Doug Wechsler has written several extremely detailed nature books for kids, and this one is no exception. If you’re not familiar with these amazing creatures, I’d highly recommend this as a great introduction.

Roger McMullan
Cicadapocalypse

This is a more creative approach to teaching about periodical cicadas: through a story about two squirrels that are terrified of them. The 90-page graphic novel is sprinkled with facts and visuals of the insects, which are reviewed at the end of the book. It’s a bit small for a read aloud, but is sure to be checked out frequently from the school or public library.
