Learn About Periodical Cicadas
A collection of educational resources
There are lots and lots of places to learn about periodical cicadas, so I’ve tried to whittle that list of resources down to some of my favorites, highlighted below.
While I am the author and illustrator of the graphic novel Cicadapocalypse, I am only a cicada fan – not an entomologist. The people behind these resources and research (and its availability) are what have educated me enough to feel confident about creating an educational graphic novel and activity pages about these amazing insects.

The University of Connecticut
The University of Connecticut leads some of the most comprehensive research about periodical cicadas that I’ve seen.
Their general information page is a great fact sheet for reporters, educators, and cicada enthusiasts alike.
One of my favorite parts of their site is looking at their 3D scans of each species. (There are 7 species.) Here’s the direct link to one of the 3D scans of the magicicada septendecim, also known as the “pharaoh” cicada because of its super cool call that sounds like “pha-raoh”
There are a ton of resources hidden in the tabs at the top of this site, but they are most well known for their efforts to map the ever-evolving geographic regions of each brood. (The links in the bottom table will show you the maps of individual broods.)
The University of Purdue’s website about cicadas has many basic facts, as well as a PDF for kids.
